A key strategy of UP is to place the program into the hands of the youth.

From its inception United Playaz has been a youth-driven and youth-led program. UP participants take responsibility for planning and organizing activities, outreach and recruitment, and providing education and violence prevention advocacy to their peers. UP’s structure is flexible in that it allows youth to direct activities under the support and guidance of adult staff and mentors. Additionally, UP programs designed to provide wrap-around services that assist youth in every aspect of their lives, keeping them from the dangers of entry/re-entry to the justice system.

Key Projects and Activities

UP services are built upon five key elements: case management, leadership skills development, connection to community/civic engagement, and access to alternative recreational activities, and coordinated services with schools, community based organizations, and youth serving programs. Each of these elements provides youth with competencies that promote leadership development, and are grounded in providing education and resources that address the social issues that affect youth and communities at risk of violence.
